Language’s Consequences: a Test of Linguistic-based Measures of Culture Using Hofstede’s Dimensions

چکیده
Culture is traditionally measured in international management research using indices of cultural values. We develop a new linguistic-based measure of cultural similarity which is more representative and more widely available than values surveys, and use a structural equation model to show how it is related to three of Hofstede’s four cultural dimensions.

This study examines the design characteristics of Web interfaces from Arab countries using Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. Organizational and graphical elements on a sample of 15 home pages of government Web portals are examined using content analysis. Element frequency scores were correlated with Hofstede’s dimensions and interpreted based on Marcus and Gould’s (2000) study. The results sugges...

Among various cultural models, the dichotomy of static versus dynamic models has provided a fertile ground for research. Although a number of static models are suggested, the dominant trend in almost all static models is provided by Hofstede who focuses on cultural differences along four major dimensions (power distance, individualism, uncertainty avoidance, and masculinity) and reduces “the co...
